Los Angeles is not exactly know for its brass movement, however when sound waves from New Orleans hit LA’s stages, they do it powerful like a storm. Almost a week ago, The Mint hosted a very packed night were The Soul Rebels brought the fundamentals of New Orleans brass with a repertoire far from traditional. The band first caught my ear when hearing them do a cover of Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams” in the mix tape Let’s Go Get Em, a collaboration between producer Derrick Ah Sam and DJ Frank Foreal which is a mosaic of today’s sounds of New Orleans. After hearing this compilation, exploring them live became a must.
Throughout the night while keeping the traditional sounds The Soul Rebels made nothing but brass magic when transforming songs such as Michael Jackson’s “I Wanna Rock with You” and even Reel 2 Real’s “I Like to Move it Move it” into wild yet respectful brass getting the crowd rowdy. They also performed original songs that include vocals which is not usually found in your traditional brass band, however they blended their contemporary flavor masterfully. With their mighty drums and horns, the Soul Rebels brought a raw performance keeping the energy in the room constantly elevated and wanting for more.
