Last week, GrimyGoods sent me to photograph R&B singer, producer, songwriter Kelis at El Rey Theatre. To my surprise, her musicians entourage was integrated by some of Los Angeles bestest Nia Andrews, Gee Gee Gallegos, Dexter Story, Todd Simon, Patrick Bailey to name a few backing up her amazing show. She did make the crowd wait a longer than desired but all in the audience kept their cool and were excited when she came out rocking a golden dress showing off her beautiful woman in the Go curves. I wrote a review for GG and I’d encourage you to read it HERE.
Kelis did a wonderful opening with the intro of Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good”. She sang many of everybody’s favorites such as “Milk Shake” and introduced us to the songs in her new album Food which integrates very mature content as she moves forward from her past relationships as a strong, single mother and professional. Major props to Anti’s freshest member Aaron Livingston aka Son Little who with his delightfully nostalgic voice and lyrics opened the night with a charming one man show giving the night a nice touch since the beginning.
